Miyashiro Invitational Recap
Notes From Coach Jeff Bissell –
The heat was on in Santa Rosa last weekend, as temperatures rose into the 90s for the first time all year, and the De Anza College Swimming & Diving teams rose to the occasion.
Competing at the annual Bob Miyashiro Invitational at Santa Rosa Junior College, both Mountain Lions teams delivered standout performances – with each squad capturing first place overall.
Mid-season form is clearly trending in the right direction, as the teams continue building momentum toward the Coast Conference Championships in mid-April and the 3C2A State Championships in early May.
On the Women's side, several athletes turned in exceptional swims.
Erika Correa led the way with a dominant showing, placing second in the 500 Freestyle, winning the 100 Butterfly in record-breaking fashion, and adding another victory in the 200 Butterfly.
Petrina Olson contributed across the board with a second-place finish in the 50 Freestyle, a win in the 100 IM, and a runner-up finish in the 100 Freestyle.
Lyla Elaydi made a statement in the 200 IM, posting the fastest time in the state so far this season.
The 800 Freestyle relay team of Erika Correa, Anna Ohdake, Petrina Olson, and Lindsay Schmidt delivered one of the highlights of the weekend. Their winning time of 8:12.55 not only set a new meet record but also ranks as the second-fastest time in the state this year. Correa's lead-off split of 1:56.99 set a meet record in the 200 freestyle and currently stands as the top time in the state.
On the Men's side, the De Anza showcased both depth and top-end talent. Diver Milo Switzer swept both the 1-meter and 3-meter events.
In the pool, Gunner Hopkins was unstoppable, winning all three of his individual events, the 200 IM, 400 IM, and 200 Breaststroke, with each performance ranking among the top three in the state this season.
Brandon Wang added two wins of his own in the 100 Breaststroke and 100 IM, along with a second-place finish in the 200 IM. Mathew Cheang placed fourth in the 100 IM and second in the 200 Breaststroke, while Taesu Yim captured the 1650 freestyle title, finished third in the 500 Freestyle, and added a fifth-place finish in the 200 Freestyle.
The Men's relay teams also made a strong impact, continuing to climb the state rankings with every performance. Of the five relay events contested, all have now moved into the top seven in the state this season, showing both depth and consistency across the board. Leading the way are the 400 Freestyle relay and the 800 Freestyle relay, both of which currently rank among the top three in the state.
With strong results across the board and valuable racing experience gained, De Anza College continues to position itself as a top contender heading into the championship stretch of the season.
