Hopkins Delivers One of De Anza’s Greatest Swim Seasons
In a season defined by versatility, toughness, and record-breaking performances, freshman standout Gunner Hopkins emerged as one of the top swimmers in the state, earning Coast Conference Co-Swimmer of the Year honors while leading De Anza College Swim & Dive to an exceptional year.
Hopkins dominated the Coast Conference Championships, capturing multiple titles and establishing himself as one of the most complete swimmers in the region.
After just one year of competition at De Anza College, Hopkins will be transferring to the University of Hawaii.
His performances were not only dominant – they were historic.
Hopkins set new De Anza College records in both the 200 IM and 400 IM, while his 200 Breaststroke performance broke a 35-year-old school record and set a new Coast Conference record. That swim also ranks as the ninth fastest time in 3C2A history, placing him among the elite in California community college swimming.
Beyond his individual success, Hopkins played a key role in De Anza's relay dominance, contributing to record-setting performances in both the 800 Freestyle Relay and 400 Medley Relay.
At the 3C2A State Championships, Hopkins continued to shine on the biggest stage, earning All-American honors and placing among the top swimmers in the state.
He finished the season ranked among the top 16 swimmers in California in each of his events –an impressive feat that underscores his consistency and elite-level performance.
For Hopkins, competing at the state level alongside a large De Anza contingent made the experience even more meaningful.
"It was a really fun experience to compete at the highest level of the 3C2A with such a big group representing De Anza," Hopkins said.
While his individual accolades were significant, Hopkins pointed to team success as his most memorable moment of the season.
"The highlight of the season for me was watching the women get 3rd in the 800 Free Relay at states," he shared.
"All four of them have worked so hard all season and watching them break the conference record was inspiring."
That team-first mindset carried into De Anza's relay performances, where trust and preparation translated into podium finishes.
"Before each relay, we knew what we needed to do if we wanted to earn a medal," Hopkins said.
"We all trusted each other and the work we have put into this season. As soon as we swam, we knew we had done something amazing – and the medal was a testament to the dedication our team has."
Co-head coach Jeff Bissell praised Hopkins' all-around ability and consistency throughout the season.
"Gunner Hopkins is the definition of versatile; he can step into just about any event and compete at a high level," Bissell said.
"Winning the 200 fly at conference really showed what kind of swimmer Gunner is – tough, adaptable, and fearless."
Bissell also highlighted the reliability Hopkins brought to every meet.
"You never have to wonder what you're going to get from Gunner – it's always consistent," he added.
"He has done some great things here, but I truly believe his best swimming is still in front of him."
Co-head coach Danielle Altman stated that Hopkins also brings a high level of energy and dedication to the team.
"Whether it's his work ethic at practices, his competitive nature in races, or his openness to feedback, his focus is always to be his best in and out of the pool," Altman said.
With a conference title, multiple records, All-American honors, and a reputation as one of the most versatile swimmers in the state, Hopkins' freshman campaign sets the tone for a bright future – both for himself and the De Anza Swim & Dive program.
