De Anza Track & Field Records Multiple Wins

 

The De Anza College track and field team turned in a strong showing at the Beaver Invitational held February 28 at American River College, highlighted by multiple event victories in the throws and strong performances across sprints, distance, and relays.

Women's Highlights

Sophomore Genesis Mailangi led the De Anza women with another dominant day in the throws. Mailangi captured first place in the shot put (12.33m), first place in the discus (42.50m), and first place in the hammer throw (45.75m). She also added a second-place finish in the javelin (34.50m) to complete a four-event performance for the Lions.

De Anza also recorded several strong performances on the track.

Freshman Junya Zeng had one of the top performances of the day for the Lions, placing third in the 400 meters (59.54) and adding sixth in the 200 meters (26.49).

Sophomore Sarah Morales placed ninth in the 400 meters (1:02.39) and also competed in the 200 meters.

In the sprint events, Emma Ulloa finished 17th in the 100 meters (13.67), while Kayli Hrvatin ran 14.29 in the 100 meters and later competed in the 100-meter hurdles (17.59).

Freshman Naomi Seastrom delivered a strong race in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing second overall in 1:08.24.

The De Anza middle-distance group also competed in multiple events. Freshman Angelina Perez ran 2:41.46 in the 800 meters, while Angela Ellis followed closely in 2:43.61.

In the 1500 meters, sophomore Siena Pignataro placed second overall in 4:55.79. Teammates Corinne Thelen (5:18.06), Nathaly Bernal (5:30.89), and Erika Pham (5:53.45) also competed for the Lions.

Freshman Annabella Gatchalian added another field event performance for De Anza, competing in both the shot put (6.37m) and the hammer throw (32.18m).

Men's Highlights

The De Anza men's sprint group saw several athletes compete in both the 100 and 200 meters.

In the 100 meters, freshman Reign Garma led the Lions with 11.55, while Zayveon Ross (11.97), Ryan Perez (12.00), Noah Deleon (12.08), and Dylan Maskiewicz (12.17) also competed.

In the 200 meters, sophomore Fabian Oduk posted the top De Anza mark with 22.97, while Aidan Shelley (24.00) and Zayveon Ross (24.88) added additional performances.

Oduk also led De Anza in the 400 meters, finishing 15th in 52.26. Teammates Aidan Shelley (54.42), Allan Rojas Munoz (57.92), Leo Mendieta Torres (58.56), and Carlos Santizo (1:01.74) also competed.

In the 800 meters, freshman Anthony Dianda ran 2:04.14, followed by Keaton Wong (2:05.67) and Jonathan Kammerer (2:14.30).

Wong and Kammerer also competed in the 1500 meters, finishing 4:28.48 and 4:35.66, respectively.

The De Anza distance group had a strong showing in longer races as well. Freshman Alexander Herrera finished third in the 5000 meters (16:47.77), while Brandon Phan added an eighth-place finish in 18:35.58.

In the 3000-meter steeplechase, De Anza placed four athletes in the top ten:
Jerry Dang (5th – 10:58.64)
Roee Biluar (6th – 11:02.63)
Toby Huynh (9th – 12:09.08)
Lenny Cortes (10th – 12:18.59)

The De Anza men also competed in the 4x100 relay, where the team of Reign Garma, Roman Johnson, Omar Shaaban, and Jordan McKinney finished seventh in 44.41.

In the men's throws, junior Liam Brennan had a standout day for the Lions. Brennan placed second in the shot put (14.14m) and won the discus with a throw of 50.03 meters.

Brennan also competed in the hammer throw, finishing eighth (37.47m).

Teammate Ryan McGlashan added another strong result for the De Anza throws group with a second-place finish in the hammer throw (49.53m).
